Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) used in skincare to exfoliate the skin’s surface and help improve the look and feel of texture. Used correctly, it can be a useful step for skin that looks dull, uneven or rough.

The key is not to make exfoliation the whole routine. Lactic acid works best when it has a clear job and is balanced with hydration, moisturiser and daily sun protection.

What does lactic acid do?

Lactic acid helps loosen and remove dead surface cells. That can leave skin feeling smoother and looking fresher over time. It is also often chosen by people who want chemical exfoliation without relying on a physical scrub every time.

Because exfoliating acids can increase sensitivity if overused, more is not better. Follow the directions for the product you are using and pay attention to how your skin responds.

Who might use lactic acid?

If your skin is very reactive, compromised or already irritated, introduce exfoliating products carefully and avoid piling several strong treatments into the same routine.

How to use lactic acid in a routine

  1. Cleanse.
  2. Apply your lactic acid treatment as directed on the pack.
  3. Follow with a moisturiser if appropriate for your routine.

You do not need to use every active ingredient on the same night. On lactic-acid evenings, keep the rest of the routine straightforward.

What should you avoid combining with it?

Avoid turning one evening into an exfoliation stack. Using several strong exfoliating acids or scrubs together can increase the chance of irritation. Daily SPF is especially important when exfoliating acids are part of your routine.
